Description
Everyone knows about The Wall at the Vietnam Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, DC. But there's actually a second wall on the mall there also.
At the World War II Memorial, which is at the end of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool opposite the Lincoln Memorial, there's also a wall. It's a curved wall set down in the memorial with a reflecting pool in front of it. Across the face of the wall are 4,048 gold stars. Each gold star represents 100 American military deaths during the war. This is to honor the over 400,000 military personnel that lost their lives in World War II. The gold star has a history during the war of representing a family member lost. When an American went off to fight in the war, the family would sometimes put a white flag with a blue star on it in their window. If their family member was killed during the war they would take down that flag and put up another that had a gold star.
